Obama's Royal Retinue
Vacationing Obama can't shed White House entourage ... President Barack Obama (left) had a simple task for his first morning on vacation: shoot over to a Martha's Vineyard bookstore to fill out his daughters' summer reading list and grab himself a novel. Easier said than done. His SUV, part of a 20-vehicle motorcade, passed through a cordon of Massachusetts State Police motorcycle officers, in a protective cocoon of Secret Service agents. Tagging along for the quick trip Friday were White House communications trucks, an ambulance and two vans full of reporters and photographers. It was the same drill Saturday when he went to the beach for a picnic lunch with his family. This may be down time for Obama, but like all modern presidents, celebrities and some wannabes, he must move about with a not insignificant entourage. It includes security officers and their array of arms, as well as advisers, friends in and out of politics, and a cook who doubles as a golfing buddy. – AP
Dominant Social Theme: It is all necessary.
Free-Market Analysis: It is not a novel observation, but it probably bears repeating. The vacations that President Obama takes are like some sort of royal procession. It wasn't so obvious under George Bush because he had his own "ranch" to go to. But like Bill Clinton, Obama is a wanderer when it comes to vacation destinations and thus much is made of his travels. Is there a kind of sub-dominant social theme here? We think so. "This is the most important man in the world and he travels in style that befits his position."
Of course, we don't think that Obama is the most important man in the world. We believe he is a kind of manufactured individual who carries the water for a shadowy power elite that evidently and obviously stands behind him. It turns out that, as with George Bush, many of his vague campaign promises degraded into business as usual when it came time for governance.
George Bush, as a titular, small-government republican, did almost everything seemingly in his power to expand government and make use of big-government levers. He went to war on two and even three fronts and maintained the wars for his entire presidency. He attempted (or succeeded) in expanding the federal government's reach in public education, in religious affairs and most importantly when it came to US domestic spying. His efforts at removing habeas corpus, at combining a dozen or more intelligence agencies under one Homeland Security roof and his determination to rip down walls between agencies to create a unified KGB-type architecture ran counter to the small government, free-market principals he espoused on the campaign trail.
But Barack Obama's stay in the White House has produced similar disappointments for his followers. Obama abandoned universal health care when the political costs became difficult to bear, and he has not moved aggressively on either immigration or cap-and-trade, "green" issues as his leftist base once hoped he would. He has proven an even larger disappointment as regards foreign policy, removing troops from Iraq but still keeping some 50,000 stationed there. In Afghanistan, he has actually expanded the war in hopes of "winning" it or at least making it difficult for the Taliban to impose their version of victory.
What is clear, when one examines the two most recent presidential regimes, is the remarkable amount of continuity between them. In fact, George Bush had confused Republicans everywhere by attempting to "solve" the immigration problem by in a sense legalizing South American immigrants already in the United States and then by suggesting some sort of guest worker program. His proposals, in fact, can be seen as more radical than what Obama has thus far suggested on the subject.
When it comes to overseas wars, there is almost no difference between the two presidents. Nor is there when it comes to the more shadowy "war against terror." American intel agencies are still vastly funded; Homeland Security remains an ever larger bureaucratic bungle, sucking in resources like a black hole. Congress, generally, appropriates vast sums for the intel-industrial and military-industrial complex, and this sort of funding remains even as presidents come and go.
If one agrees therefore, at this point, that it makes little difference who is in office – as the state apparatus functions regardless – then we would suggest the outward pomp and ceremony is in a sense compensating for the president's larger lack of power. The American president's actual ability to forge a new a course may be limited, but the show surrounding him continually gets bigger. The idea, perhaps, is to create a sense of significance that he actually doesn't have. He is to be presented as the Great and Powerful Oz so that no one notices the men behind the curtain.
Obama certainly does travel in style. He doesn't drive himself anywhere. He has a helicopter that he uses even for very short trips within Washington DC. For longer trips there is Air Force One. The retinue he travels with his is extravagant and the press coverage that he receives on his trips, especially the vacations, is downright foolish. One is treated, in the mainstream media, to recitations of menus, golf scores and reading material. It is as if no detail is too minute to cover and no luxury too large to provide.
Conclusion: Like a titular head-of-state, Obama rushes from vacation to vacation with breathless coverage throughout. And while people may speculate as to why he is taking so many vacations, we think we know: There's just not very much he can do on the job, and his power is actually fairly circumscribed, not by the office but by circumstance and sociopolitical evolution. Picking a vacation destination may be the clearest and most unencumbered decision he gets to make. But then again, perhaps Michelle and the children do the choosing.

AGREE with DB, VERY RUDE (because difficult to read, hides sentence structure all upper case, makes YOU look like an ill-informed American).
If a "head a state" leads a state that is based on common interest and "consent of the governed", there is a very low risk of dissent and attacks on the "leader" and hence, low "necessity" of security. The Queen is a figurehead, with no "apparent" power who, for unfathomable reasons is much beloved by the tattered remnants of the "Rule Brittania" empire.
If a "head a state" leads a state that is NOT based on common interest and LACKS "consent of the governed", there is a very HIGH risk of dissent and attacks on the "leader" and hence, HIGH "necessity" of security.
In other words, the degree of security considered "necessary" by rulers is directly proportional to "lack of consent of the governed". They may disguise this as honor or "pomp and circumstance", but this is what is really going on.

Lets compare, listen up you ill informed americans, [the writer is 100%american and this is first hand on site observation] when the queen of england visited grand cayman, the queen resided in the same hotel my wife and i had on occasion, most probably an upscale suit however the same structure. Our family, sans a boy scout son, return to that note later, had occasion to greet the queen as did many others. The queen arrived at site in a borrowed vehicle. The function was to honor the boy scouts, we were able to obtain a photograph of the queen addressing each scout individually including our son. Upon exit the queen greeting each individually as possible, i requested permission to take a photo as the queen was within 3 feet from the camera, permission granted. Lets discuss security, all was invited, no one was checked for anything, the queen was accompanied by a lady medical doctor, one street clothes male, the local police were represented in less than 10 in olive uniforms, no fire arms showing of any type, and as myself a former officer, [texas, county], unable to determine any firearms concealed. The attendees were from many countries, many locals, no one prevented from attending, nor screened. The following day the queen was to dedicate a soccer stadium near our home, no previous sweeps, checks or police standing at any points of the five mile route. My family attended, however i had been building a concrete wall thus did not attend, when the festivities were complete, i walked about half the distance to the field to greet my family and return to our residence. Everyone allowing the queen to depart first. I am standing at an intersection alone, no other persons about, appearance covered with cement dust, etc. Moving towards me is the borrowed vehicle, as the vehicle turned the corner, the queen lowered the glass and waved, no leading vehicle, no following vehicle, no previous sweep, [as we in the usa do for lowly...Pun intended, mayors & others], no police or security, no snipers on roofs, no blocked roadways, just a brave trusting queen and prince phillip. A second visit repeat of first including the borrowed vehicle, in short one would be unaware of the queens visit and some 20 thousand tourists were not inconvenienced in any way. This is not unusual, the royal family move about the world with minimum disruption and fanfare. On the second trip, departure, we by chance were standing in the first layer of persons, as the, [same], vehicle came to a stop, prince phillip, [the glass already lowered], spoke with well wishers, [custom to bid the queen and prince phillip safe trip return], by chance greeted my wife. This missive was written in this manner as a personal observation for information and comparison to the obscene conduct of our officials, the pomp, waste of public funds, the sterile distancing from the people that pay their salary, arrogance, prop sets when they do interact, the disgusting lack of trust, the horrendous waste. Be reminded there were many angry tories in this great america yet as thomas jefferson rode his favorite horse to "work" as president, flanked by no one. In closing, when president ford wished to travel from houston, texas to a football game in a small nearby city of baytown, texas, i was one of the 5000 or so officers to secure passage. Interstate 10 was closed, all intersecting highways blocked about 1000 feet from i-10, every under pass, bridge, sluice pipe, creek, patch of trees, high grass was checked...And it has become vastly more disrupting and expensive. Thank you for reading this message.

Security has to be an issue for both presidents. In this line of work, one can accumulate very bitter or determined enemies.
President Medvedev chose to arrive after rush hour. There was an image of him in his limo at the hotel in the local papers. Clearly it was after dark when the picture was taken. No one knew, and few even cared about his arrival or departure.
Obama, on the other hand, arrived the next morning and drove into the center at rush hour. He tied up half the city and disrupted the lives of thousands of people who ended up late for their work and business. He froze public transportation for over an hour. He tied up resources best used for other purposes.
He acted without any consideration of anyone else. The image that comes to mind is a male dog marking his territory. Obama considered Prague as just another hydrant on his path. This is how people here view this and other events.
I have to wonder what goes through the minds of such people, and this is not limited to the President or other celebrity American politician that comes by here, expecting to be treated like a Holy Roman Emperor. Such people are not viewed favorably in these parts, except by those who "earn a living" servicing such shows.
Echoing some of the previous posters, there has to be some mental or spiritual defect, within not only these politicians but also within those who elect such people and allow them to continue in office.

But it is most hard to read. We have asked you before to submit feedbacks in lower case. Is your computer keyboard stuck? You continue to provide feedbacks in this matter and you will have the satisfaction of writing them - but not reading them at the Bell.

Obama may be preparing for a role as a post-president in a post-American world since his Team is totally out of touch with America.

Always the master of understatement...
If you won't say it, I will...
So, the Grand Poobah, the democratic messiah (setting racial equality back to the stone age) has no choice (or ideas, for that matter). So, what does it mean for the CHOICE of those who CHOSE Obama?
I'll give you a hint. Those with no CHOICE have ZERO CHANCE OF SURVIVAL, in fact, they are the living dead, zombies driven by compulsion.
Obama will be allowed to retire in a velvet rut, into the obscurity of history and irrelevancy, his purpose executed. Since the US IS the US people with no choice, what of them?

the Terrorists that have been trying to do us harm now for decades. Perhaps they will tire of this pursuite or run out of children to carry their suicide bombs.
What I don't get is how you can equate the Bush White House with
what's going on now. Open your eyes! They are treating this country as their own private candy store with no one to say no. They are nationalizing our economy as they are running us into bankruptcy with their nieve attempts at governance. Bush had his
blemishes, but he looks like a cover girl next to what we have going now!
