Sorry amanfromMars but I have to disagree. If you insert is for in then the entire list that goes on ... becomes what bothers him the most and that does not make sense. Such blind research and adherence to existing flawed dogmas are a bother to all, and are indicative of a closed and narrow mind in a world with worlds in which open and broad minds easily rule as if Gods with Godlike powers. And such certainly puts the rantings of religion which would profess to know of the practice, but concern itself only with the rhetorical sale of the notion, into the right perspective.

Am I right in thinking then, that the covenant God made with Abraham does not extend to modern day "Jews" any more than it does to anyone else--it is a matter of who chooses to follow Jesus. All those who follow Jesus are included in that covenant with God.

I've been dreaming of Costa Rica ever since I first heard about it probably 20 years ago. A ceramic artist/teacher/friend married a Costa Rican National and they had a dream of building a school there. He said he would love for me to teach there. Hmmmmm. I doubt he could pay me, but if I got a flight down, he could probably put me up with some friends or family there.

First I am not a great believer in the ethnicity argument for Jewishness. The Bible is very clear that to be an Israelite or a Jew means to join oneself to the faith originally begun with the call of Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldees. In this sense the purpose of the Law of Moses which is the putative foundation of modern "Judaism" was fulfilled in Jesus Christ because He Himself said so. This was the end of the religion of Judaism as far as God is concerned. The only way to be a Jew in God's eyes is to be a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Although for a time, probably up until the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, Christianity was considered by the Romans to be merely a sect of Judaism, known as the followers of the Way or the Nazarene sect, the truth is that it was the continuation of the faith originally imparted to Abraham followed by Isaac and Jacob/Israel, embraced by Moses and all the prophets of Israel up to John the Baptist who was the last of these prophets. Since John the Baptist the promised Kingdom of God has come in the Person of the Messiah King, Jesus Christ and the followers of the King are the inheritors of that faith given to Abraham, according to all the apostles and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

The religion that grew up around the Law given to Moses, and imparted by him to the new nation of Israel at Mount Sinai, gradually shrunk down into being the religion of just three of the original thirteen tribes and it was centred on the temple in Jerusalem. After the temple was destroyed in 70 AD the religion developed by a religious sect called the Pharisees, based upon THEIR interpretation of the Law of Moses, became the foundation of the rabbinic "Judaism" that we know today. It has no connection with the faith of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob/Israel or indeed the faith of Moses and all the prophets.

Most of the adherents to this religion left Judea after the Bar Kokhba revolt 132-136 AD and joined the other "Jews" in the diaspora all over the ancient world. These were the "Jews" who belonged to this religion of "Judaism" and since they were active proselytisers there were many other ethnic groups added to their number. The province was renamed Syro-Palestina by the Romans after the ancient enemies of the Israelites. Some Jews no doubt stayed behind in Syro-Palestina but none were permitted to enter the city of Aelia Capitolina which had been built by the Emperor Hadrian on the site of the city of Jerusalem that had been utterly destroyed by the Roman armies as Jesus had prophesied. These "Jews" would have either continued to practise the rabbinic "Judaic" religion or have converted to Christianity or eventually to Islam when the Muslims invaded in 634 AD.

There has been an effort over the past one hundred and fifty years to establish a genetic identity for the "Jewish" people but it is very difficult to do this given their very chequered genetic history. What they do have is a cultural identity that is largely self imposed and they attempt to extend this to as many as they can in order to swell their numbers, especially since they acquired some of the land of Palestine as their homeland. Schlomo Sand who wrote the article that Speedy linked to is I believe a great believer in the one nation concept for the land of Palestine i.e. the nation of Israel as one people, "Jews" Muslims and Christians. He no doubt wants to prove these Palestinian genetic links to the ancient Jews in order to promote this idea. Whether there is any truth in these contentions is in the final analysis irrelevant.

The Bible is quite clear that the true inheritance of the promises of God is through faith in the promised Seed, Jesus Christ. The people we know as the "Jews" will eventually all convert to the original faith given to Abraham and fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ along with the rest of humanity.
