Tipping the Scales for Liberty

Saturday, January 23, 2010 – by  Dr. Tibor Machan

Dr. Tibor Machan

It has been my experience that people who take politics seriously tend to want to have their idea of a good or just system of laws fully implemented. Yet these people aren't ignorant about the poor prospects of achieving their goal. Unless a society is being ruled by some incredibly powerful individual or tight knit group, the public policies and laws will be a reflection of a hodge podge of ideas, principles, objectives and so forth. Largely democratic societies are not hospitable to just some given system of justice but will routinely be a reflection of many different notions of how human communities ought to be configured.

Nonetheless, those of us who are serious about politics will not just settle for the plain fact that we cannot have exactly what we judge best, namely, that their pure system of this or that political economy will come to dominate the realm. It would require silencing or making impotent all those with whom one disagrees, something those who strive for liberty may not even consider. Because people aren't likely to be persuaded of a particular view of how a community should be arranged -- something that is true even if there is such a system that has been conceived by some of them -- the best that can be achieved is some kind of a mixed political order. And no such mixed system is likely to remain in place for very long because the percentage of those who favor some one way of doing things will keep fluctuating. No sooner will a population emerge with a certain number of socialists, communists, libertarians, monarchists, theocrats and whatever combination of these can be conceived, another one will replace it, one with different percentages exerting influence over laws and public policies.

Nonetheless, despite the truth of the above, it is not futile to strive to bring about the correct, proper, truly just political-economic order. The reason is that the prospect of getting things right about how people ought to live together in their communities is so vital that the mere but real possibility of its actualization makes the striving worth it all. It's a little like striving to be as healthy or fit or, especially, as good a human individual as one can possibly be. Even without the likelihood of success it is worth giving it all a try. One way to see this is to think of it as a pursuit that is worth undertaking because were it to come to full fruition, nothing much greater could be achieved. That is how important justice is in human communities, as important as moral excellence is in a person's life.

Sometimes this outlook is deemed to be idealistic or utopian, a virtual guarantee of failure. And, yes, failure is more likely than not, although even the bits of success in this or that human community, for a more or less lengthy period of time, is by no means negligible. And without making the effort to bring about a just society, even such partial accomplishments are going to be absent from most human communities. Just as one's regular exercise routine undertaken reasonably frequently will not make one perfectly fit or healthy, it will do much more than nothing. The fight for justice is similar -- even the fight itself has its valuable results and if one adds the practical accomplishments that come from even a failed effort, its value cannot be disputed.

It is important to come to terms with all this in mixed systems such as those that dominate most of the developed world. Indeed, it is coming to terms with these points and following their practical implications that has made the beneficial development of that world possible. So for those who might be tempted to become discouraged with where the fight for liberty is headed just now it should be pointed out that even a little bit of progress (or prevention of regress) is significant. Yes, the statists are making headway toward re-establishing a coercively run society in many parts of the world but those who understand how destructive this is need not despair. They need to keep in mind that without their vigilance statism would be far more extensive than it is. So they need to keep it up, and not relent, ever.

Another outstanding editorial from Dr. Machan re The Golden Tetrahedron: Truth - Reality - Justice - Liberty. Semper Fi!

Posted by Bill Ross on 1/23/2010 8:12:16 AM

IMHO, the problem of justice and social organization was SOLVED by our far wiser ancestors, but educationally / media subverted away.

The answer is simple. Competent Judges need to wake up from their contrived trap of believing:"Not only must justice be done, but, the PERCEPTION of justice must be seen".

This single statement / belief strips the judiciary of all power to be objective (fact oriented) and places justice under control of whomever manipulates social perceptions. Objective justice must be re-established. Our far wiser ancestors realized that civilization is a matter of predator control. Currently, predators occupy the bench. A judicial civil war is not far off.The only path to peace and prosperity is to be neither predator nor prey.

Predators are created from the delusion: that something from nothing is possible (mysticism). In particular, you cannot be a predator without defensive blowback from your prey, a cost which is currently paid for by "we, the people".We are dealing with a different brand of mystics than our ancestors overthrew in the Renaissance.

We need a new Renaissance. The last one was started by this insight, now suppressed / educationally subverted away:"We live in an action precedes consequence reality Nothing is REAL until it manifests as a measurable force / thing in the physical world. "The implications of this are profound. Eg: We are already free. We can do anything allowed by the laws of physics and nobody can stop us. The only choice of others, organized force included is what to do in response.

The question of law becomes what ACTIONS should be sanctioned? Our far wiser ancestors answered: those which cause measurable harm. The basic methodology of our predators is: Define forcefully maintained environments such that power can choose (action) (and profit), the consequence (cost) is paid for by prey or socialized. In other words, they have broken the 1:1 relationship between who does the action and who faces the consequence.

This is contrary to the "rule of law" and a subversion of basic reality. It places us all in a position of cognitive dissonance (appearing insane) because the survival choices demanded by reality are opposed by those who forcefully coerce us.

Our "elites" have put a lot of sociopathic thought into maintaining the position of "master predator" and convincing (educationally / media subverting) we the sheeple that it is "necessary" (Machiavelli).

We are all free to profit or suffer and learn (adapt to excellence) by facing the consequences of our OWN choices. Injustice is to be forced to suffer the consequences of choices of unaccountable (irresponsible) others. "The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern. Every class is unfit to govern. The law of liberty tends to abolish the reign of race over race, of faith over faith, of class over class." ~ Lord ActonDarwin also warned us: Survival EQUALS ability to adapt to environment EQUALS ability to choose correctly EQUALS freedom:

This is NOT rocket science, failure to comprehend is a problem of educational / media subversion which has convinced the sheeple that fact, reason and proven knowledge (REALITY) is just one of many valid opinions. It is not. REALITY is SUPREME and cares not for dissenting opinions.

I am curious to know the editors opinion of Free State Project in New Hampshire as it relates to the above article's view of the reality of "mixed systems". Is this attempt to concentrate the seeds of liberty in a geographical area likely to advance the cause? Or is the better strategy, as suggested by Dr. Machan, vigilance?

Reply from the Daily Bell:

We're pro-"free state" (New Hampshire), though we think the secession movement in Vermont is to some extent phony, backed by global warmists and peak oiler types. Maybe something has changed in New Hampshire, but when we last looked, it seemed both sincere and worthwhile.

Thank you, I appreciate the excellent analogy about healing the body politic.

I am very pleased to see the Daily Bell carrying the writings of Tibor. He has been a source not only of knowledge and influence but an inspiration. I know when he writes about what Liberty and tyranny are that he knows of what he writes. He once lived in a tyrannical State and later came came to the US to enjoy more Liberty. Tibor's life experiences and intelligence gives him a deep understanding of Liberty and tyranny, which makes him a rich source of knowledge to be used for any lover of Liberty.

Great points by the Dr Machan, really enjoy his outlook. He is completely informed on the subject of liberty, and sees the small changes that the proactive few are making in the revolution against statism, working.

I find myself getting discouraged when I see the affects of collectivism taking a firm hold, such as children being indoctrinated through the public school system in believing giving up personal liberties is a good thing.

Then I meet people like Dr. Machan and get excited and get back to work spreading the freedom message. To do your small part here is a suggestion.
