Charlie Garcia: America’s $1 Trillion Gold Confession. China Preps a Siege
By Matt Morgan - September 25, 2026

Summary

Garcia frames the situation as pure arithmetic: the US owes $40.1 trillion, interest is the largest line in the federal budget, the 12-month T-bill now yields 100 basis points above the 3.49% average rate on existing debt, and $7 trillion in bills must be refinanced while Japan has stopped buying and Bessent’s yen intervention and Treasury buybacks have failed to stem selling. He argues gold at $4,338 is delinking from the dollar and from rates because the bond vigilantes are pricing supply rather than inflation, China’s record 1,100 tons of imports year to date is “siege proofing” ahead of a possible gold-linked currency, and every path open to Fed chair Warsh (hike, cut or print) leads back to the same problem, so investors should hold at least 10% in gold, silver and miners plus Bitcoin. He adds that the consumer is running on credit cards, stocks are diverging from credit markets as in 1987, 2000 and 2008, the Strait of Hormuz has driven diesel up 60%, and a wave of 30 socialist primary winners signals political fallout from a K-shaped economy.

Top 5 Key Topics

  • The refinancing math: Only 2 of the recent 90 basis point rise in the 10-year (now over 5%) reflects inflation premium; the rest is supply from $7 trion in maturing T-bills. Garcia notes the Fed quietly added about $360 billion to its balance sheet since December, $305 billion of it in bills, and yields rose anyway, which he likens to bailing the ocean with a teaspoon.
  • Warsh, Powell and the rate hike: Garcia says he predicted the hike three weeks in advance because Warsh needed to establish inflation credibility before the November election and only needed four more votes on a 12-member committee where Powell still votes. If hikes continue, borrowing costs balloon the deficit; if he cuts, inflation reignites; if he prints, the dollar weakens.
  • Consumer stress data: Household interest expense has more than doubled from $244 billion since the COVID lows, cash-out refis jumped 20% in one quarter to 53% of all refis (a bigger jump than 2008), 29% of buy-now-pay-later users buy groceries with it, small business bankruptcies run 63% above last year, and consumer discretionary stocks ex-Tesla and Amazon are down 10% while the S&P is up 12%. The misery index (gas near $4.50 plus 7%+ mortgages) is back at its 2022 peak with no stimulus cushion this time.
  • Gold reserve revaluation and stablecoins: Serious discussion is underway about marking US gold from the $42 statutory value to market, handing Bessent nearly a $1 trillion war chest but admitting gold is worth 100 times the book figure. Garcia thinks dollar stablecoins and agentic payment rails (Meta’s Muse, Grok wallets, NEAR up 400% in a month) will help absorb Treasury supply by only 10 to 15%, not cure the problem.
  • Hormuz, diesel and the credit divergence: Oil “should be at $150” and is held down mainly by China’s strategic supply while the US SPR is at its lowest since 1982 with only about 33 million barrels legally releasable; California diesel is near $9. Junk bond yields have climbed to about 7.75% and the junk ETF is down 3% while the NASDAQ hit a record 27,244, a stocks-versus-credit split he says never resolves quietly.
