You would never bow to a king. The whole idea, that one man is born with a right to rule everyone else, sounds like a fairy tale we outgrew. And we did outgrow the crown. We just kept the trick.
A right is something you hold as an individual. You cannot vote yourself the power to search your neighbour’s house, seize his wages, or conscript his son. Yet gather enough people, count the raised hands, and suddenly a stranger in a capital claims exactly those powers over millions. Nobody in that room ever held the right to hand over. Yet, the group conjured it anyway, which is not consent. That is the divine right of kings with the paperwork spread thin across a crowd.
Look at how thin that “consent” really is. Across the last six presidential elections, the winner was chosen by barely three in ten eligible adults. Not once did a majority of eligible Americans vote for the person who took power over them.
The other seven in ten stayed home, voted the other way, or were never asked. They are ruled all the same.
We told ourselves the Enlightenment ended rule by mystical authority, but it only changed the clothes we often refer as the Emperor wearing… The old king wore ermine and claimed God. The modern state wears a flag and claims “the people,” most of whom signed nothing. If a right cannot come from one person, it cannot come from a hundred million taking turns pretending it can.
